From jsimpson@stny.lrun.com Sun Apr 11 18:05:36 1999 Date: Tue, 2 Mar 1999 23:26:00 -0500 (EST) From: "Jeremy Impson (Not Simpson)" To: "Jeremy Impson (Not Simpson)" Cc: jltaylor@cyber-quest.com, rdubrava@spectra.net Newsgroups: stny.roadrunner.linux Subject: MINUTES from February 23, 1999 STNY LUG meeting The last STNY LUG meeting, held 7pm February 23, 1999 at Spectra.Net in Johnson City, was a smashing success. The initial hour of the meeting will remain undocumented, as your humble minute-man decided to arrive fashionably late (7:45pm). Presumably, much Linux-related bull was shot. Jerry Guy was a no-show, so the "2.2 kernel upgrade story" will have to wait. Jeremy Impson spoke at the whiteboard at about 8:30 pm until 10 pm, starting with the basics of networking and going to routing, firewalling, proxying, and finally IP Masquerading. As a totally objective and unbiased reporter, I must confess that never has a more provocative and informative lecture been delivered. Present were: Rick DuBrava Michael W. Lurie Kent E. "Mongo" Taylor "Smilin'" Joel Tleon Rich Webber Stephen Paine Mark Lenihan Clayton Duffek Jeff Taylor and friend (Sorry! I forget her name!) Jeremy Impson and at least two tech. support people frmo Spectra.Net poked their heads in once or twice. This is a new record of 11 (not counting tech. support) attendees! Our gracious hosts, Rick and Spectra.Net, surprised us after the talk by offering to regularly house one of our two monthly meetings at Spectra.Net's offices! This is great, because it is an environment better suited for structured discussions. So the other meeting a month will be held at restaurants, with the occasional "exotic locale" as situations and opportunities arise. The second fantastic piece of news that Rick had for us is that he has requested the domain "stnylug.org" and will provide us with a web server and a mailing list! Stay tuned! (Anyone interested in helping me and Rich Webber with the web site design should please contact me.) Much thanks to Rick and Spectra.Net for making this meeting a success, and for their willingness to support STNY LUG. The next meeting will be held March 9, 1999 at some place that we determined but that I forgot. Keep a look out for the announcement. Please, we need more ideas for activities! --Jeremy -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Jeremy Impson Linux, Perl, and Network geek jsimpson@stny.lrun.com http://source.syr.edu/~jdimpson
